First Screenshot of The Native BB Twitter Client
January 19, 2010 at 9:55 PM

Looks like RIM has been working on a twitter client for a while but it had been kept shy from the camera until now. Mauricio over at www.Blackberryrocks.com just posted a screenshot of what seems to be the rumored twitter client for the BlackBerry. The application looks a lot like Social scope. According to the rumors it should arrive at a BlackBerry near you in February.

Check out the screenshot and let us know what you think.

Some of the features rumored to have include:

  • Notification of number of new tweets on the home screen with icon, like text messages
  • Main app opens friends timeline
  • Ability to view followers
  • Follow/unfollow functions
  • Create direct messages, replies and new tweets
  • Keyword search and saved results
  • Tweet photos directly from camera or memory card
  • View photos from other tweets
  • View trending topics
  • Address book integration

Since this is a native BlackBerry app I would expect it to be a lot easier to use with better menu integrations. I guess we will just have to wait and see when the official word is out from RIM.

Drive Safely Corp wants to force safety on all drivers, NOW!!!
January 19, 2010 at 12:00 PM

We all know the devastating and widespread effects of DWI (driving while intoxicated) but many of us don't realize how much of a problem DWT (driving while texting) has become. According to Drive Safely Corporation a recent study done by Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) says that a driver's risk of collision is 23 times greater when they are texting.

In fact VTTI recommends that texting be banned in moving vehicle for all drivers. Texting while driving kills nearly 6000 people every year in the US alone. In fact on Tuesday, January 5th of 2010 I personally witnessed a brand new sedan plow into 3 cars that were in line to exit a busy highway in NY. My vehicle was only 2 cars behind those involved in the accident. I literally saw a young lady in a new import looking at the screen of her cell phone as she drove right into the cars in front of me at nearly 50MPH. She only slammed her brake at the very last instant and there was no way for her to stop her car in under a second. Two weeks later I am still thinking 'what if I was 2 cars ahead of where I was?'

The threat is real and it is no joke. The warnings we hear about driving while distracted are not empty what-ifs, they are warnings about what is happening everywhere, all the time. We are all at risk of being injured or killed by a distracted driver whether we are in the same vehicle, another vehicle or even pedestrians on a sidewalk.

According to Drive Safely Corp’s website: "Cell phone related accidents result in more than $40 billion each year.  As cell phone use increases among all demographics the problem will only get worse. Smartphones which are capable of texting, browsing the internet, emailing and playing videos will see a 500% growth in sales from 2008 to 2013.  In the last 12 months alone, the number of people watching video on their mobile device has increased 70%."

According to Harvard Center for Risk Analysis: Cell phone use contributes to roughly 6% of all accidents which equates to around 636,000 crashes, 330,000 injuries, 12,000 serious injuries and 2,600 deaths each year. The annual cost of crashes caused by cell phone use is estimated to be $43 billion.

The government has been looking into this epidemic for a while now. So far nearly 20 states have passed legislation that makes Driving While Texting illegal, and last year a bill was introduced by the senate that would force the remaining states to pass similar laws.

Drive Safely Corp. (DSC) claims it has the solution. Last year DSC launched a suite of products, entitled "Stay Alert Features (SAFe)", aimed at reducing motor vehicle accidents related to distracted driving. This suite of patent-pending products is intended to prevent drivers of motor vehicles from accessing various messenger functions of their mobile phones while allowing passengers to continue to use their messenger services.

The SAFe Product Suite is comprised of several individual products, each designed for a specific purpose:

-       Anti-Messaging Technology (AMT): This line of products includes Anti-Texting Technology, Anti-Email Technology and Anti-MultiMedia Technology. These are designed to disable a driver's access to SMS texts, Emails and Multimedia (audio, video, social networking).

-       Anti-Browsing Technology (ABT): This product is designed to prevent drivers from using their phones to access the internet.

How it works…
All of Drive Safely Corp.'s products in the SAFe Suite utilize Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) data to determine if the user's mobile phone is in a moving vehicle.  If it is determined that the phone is in motion a screen pops up whenever the user first attempts to access the targeted function of the phone (SMS text, MMS, e-mail, Browser, Multi-Media). For example if the driver tries to read or compose an SMS text message a screen pops up and advises the user that "Texting While Driving is Illegal," and then asks the user: "Are you a driver?" If the user answers "YES" then texting capabilities are disabled until the phone has stopped moving for a period of time. If the user responds "NO" (not a driver) then the phone enters the Attention Validation Sequence (AVS). The Attention Validation Sequence displays randomly assigned letters, numbers and symbols on the screen.  In order to a! void immediate disablement of the phone's messenger functions the user must input the data exactly as shown in a very short period of time. I actually sat in DSC's driving simulator and tried passing the AVS while driving at around 40MPH and trying to keep my eyes on the road, and I can tell you it seemed impossible to pass. Trust me, I'm a seasoned video-gamer so I am pretty good at giving my attention to several things at once (chatting voice with my teammates, eating my late late dinner, answering BBMs on my BlackBerry and navigating my way through burning cities while being attacked by zombies) but I could not pass the AVS and alas my texting was disabled.

So the technology works and it is coming to your cell phone soon. According to Drive Safely Corp. their software works on all cell phone platforms and they are working with all of the major cell carriers to push this software onto all phones soon. The government is on board with them and they have no competitors. Unlike other software apps that disable texting (or other activities) while the phone is in motion DSC's SAFe Suite cannot be disabled by the user. It will be uploaded to your phone by your carrier and it will always be there to enforce its rules, like it or not.

The thought of my phone being monitored through GPS and cell tower triangulation makes me wonder about privacy issues and the fact that this cannot be disabled means you are stuck with it even if it has bugs or causes your phone to misbehave, but if this really proves to cut down significantly on deaths and injuries resulting from textually active drivers I will simply have to acquiesce.

So how do you feel about this? Feel free to sound off by taking the poll and placing comments under this post. Keep in mind that in a recent AAA study 95% of those polled thought texting while driving was unacceptable, though 18% said that they recently texted and drove.  Half of the drivers aged 16-24 said they routinely texted while driving.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

LotusConnections While a majority of enterprises do not use IBM Lotus, RIM has been working on improving their integration with the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. RIM just announced two new applications, Lotus Quickr 1.0 and Lotus Connections 2.3 today at the 17th Lotusphere conference.

The new Lotus Quickr application allows users to access their IBM document collaboration software in a quick and secure fashion. You can easily navigate libraries and folders, uploadm preview, edit, or download content. It supposedly also has a nice integration with Documents to Go.

Features include:

  • Fast access to information – There’s no need to launch the browser and log in, and no time spent waiting for web pages to render.
  • Optimized for mobile use – The BlackBerry Clients are deeply integrated with core applications in the smartphone for a seamless and intuitive experience.
  • Multitasking – The BlackBerry smartphone OS allows multiple applications to run at the same time, which makes them ideal for social networking and collaboration while mobile.
  • Market-leading end-to-end security – Integration with BlackBerry® Enterprise Server provides very strong encryption and high security standards, a top requirement by CIOs for the use of social networking and collaboration solutions in the enterprise.
  • Mobile application management – Leveraging the over-the-air application push capabilities, robust IT policies and advanced controls of BlackBerry® Enterprise Server, IT departments can save a tremendous amount of time when deploying these apps, especially when deployments involve hundreds or thousands of users.

Will SocialScope Ever Be Released? Hopefully…
January 19, 2010 at 9:00 AM

socialscopeliteSocialScope is one of the best Twitter apps out there for the BlackBerry but most people are locked out of trying it by their closed beta. SocialScope has been in beta since December 2008 which is one of the longest private beta periods I have ever heard of. Those of us who have access to the application can attest to how great it is but SocialScope needs to really hurry up or RIM will release their own official client before they ever get out of private beta.

As an update Tashanna let us know about an update that eve6er69 posted up from SocialScope. Essentially it tells everybody to hold tight…

People of Earth: We've been getting a lot of questions about the SocialScope beta process and want to address them.
First, no one should feel left out because they haven't received an invite or are running a different version then someone else. As the beta progresses every one will be upgraded and more users will be added.
Second, we're always seeding new versions of the app to small groups of users to test, tune and tweak SocialScope. Keeping the test groups small allow us to work closely with these users; making changes that would otherwise drive you cray and lead to overwhelming number of support emails for us. This is an iterative process that can take many versions until its ready for a wider group of users.
Finally, we've tried to be as inclusive as possible leading to a very very large private beta. That means we can't respond to every email or @reply (we wish we could, but we're a small team), but your fee! dback is really valuable to us and we read every email we get. "How do you select users to seed versions to?" Its largely random, but sometimes based on device type and carrier if we're trying to track down a specific issue. "How long will it take for me to get version x?" We can't give you a date, but as soon as its ready you'll get an upgrade notice within the app. "I haven't even gotten an invite yet…" We're constantly expanding the beta when a spot opens up or the app is released publicly we'll let you know.
Finally follow us http://twitter.com/socialscope and become a fan at http://facebook.com/socialsocpe to stay up to date with our latest news.

January 19, 2010 at 7:26 AM

Jawbone-icon

Jawbone has released the Icon we heard rumors about before. This new Bluetooth headset from Jawbone improves on Jawbones previous designs with some no brainer upgrades. For example, now it has a simple on off switch! Why don't all headsets have those! They have also thrown in a standard MicroUSB port so you don’t have to carry around their annoying proprietary connector anymore.

They have also added:

  • A new voice prompting menu which will tell you the number of the caller ID and more
  • New MyTalk apps let you customize the firmware
  • Connect to multiple phones and switch between calls on them like call waiting
  • More improvements into the noise cancellation and volume

New Halcyon Theme from Elecite
January 19, 2010 at 7:00 AM

Roland from Elecite let me know about their new theme called Halcyon. According to Elecite, “Halcyon is slick, organized and oh so pretty. It comes with a bottom dock that houses 9 locked and ordered application icons: contacts, messages, calendar, tasks, memo, profiles, browser, facebook and twitter (ubertwitter). Each icon will show a beautiful over-sized version and the Calendar and Messages apps will have a hidden Today preview area so you won't have to open the app to see your appointments. If that's not enough, an 8-9 customizable icon menu with a weather slot is ready to get you to your favorite apps.” Halcyon costs $6.99 at Elecite.Com and is available for BlackBerry 8900, 9500, 9600, and 9700. I know many of our readers have commented their disappointment at some recent Elecite themes not being available for the 9000, so maybe if you email them yourselves! …you can see what that’s about.

eBay BlackBerry App Updated With Small Tweaks
January 19, 2010 at 5:08 AM

App-World-Test-Center RIM has been working hard on the eBay BlackBerry app that they are developing internally and it is slowly moving along. One of their reps convinced me to download the app at CES and I have been using it since to place losing bids on fun gadgets.

The new version upgrades the app to 1.0.0.40 from 1.0.0.38 previously. The official update verbiage is:

This version supports additional devices such as the 8520, 8230, 8350 and 8530 models to widen our beta user base. Minor usability issues and some visual fixes were addressed. Passwords with special characters (e.g. $ & *) are supported. The new version will support 9700, 9520, 9550 and 9530 users shortly.

Sadly the app can still only be found in the BlackBerry App World Test Center category…

NOTE: Don't forget to delete the vendor.xml file located in c:program files>common files>research in motion>apploader to install it on a different carriers device.

CES: Pong Case Wants Protect You from Your BlackBerry
January 18, 2010 at 9:00 AM

pong-case I know that cellphone radiation has been a buzzword topic in the last few years. Every month or so a study is published flip flopping between the radiation being deadly to being harmless. Let me give you a perfect example. In 2003 a study found that cellphone radiation may cause Alzheimers. Another study in 2006 had it exciting our brain cortex. Now a recently published study says that cellphone radiation protects and may even reverse Alzheimers. Confused yet? So am I…

At CES Pong Research announced their new Pong cases for the BlackBerry 8300, 8310, 8320, and 8330 for $49.95. These cases are supposed to reduce your radiation exposure by up to 60% which was verified by Cetecom labs. Now that makes me wonder if the Pong case will protect me or cause Alzheimers…

If you fall on the side of the fence that is convinced cellphone radiation is harmful AND you still have a 83XX series Curve you can pick up the new case from www.pongresearch.com.
