Leaked BlackBerry Magnum Is Cool But Will Not Launch
January 21, 2010 at 1:33 PM

Cellguru got his hands on the BlackBerry Magnum, the touchscreen QWERTY hybrid that we’ve been hearing rumors about for some time now. While this device has been scrapped and will probably never see the light of day, there are also rumors of a BlackBerry Dakota which could come to market. The Dakota is still in very early planning stages so it’s still in the air about what to expect. It’s unlikely that the Dakota will come in a Bold 9000 form factor, which is sort of a shame.

Personally, I want RIM to bring back the Bold 9000 form factor. I don’t mind a bit of bulk in my device and the Bold 9000, for me personally, has been the most comfortable device to type on. The worst part of the 9000 is the trackball and it’s a little slow for some of today’s applications but all of that would have been solved with the Magnum. It wouldn’t be great for developers though, who would have to deal with even more fragmentation in the platform.

So what can we expect from the BlackBerry Dakota? Not much is known about the device other than it is rumored to be a touchscreen, QWERTY hybrid that will come with a liquid lens camera. The liquid lens camera changes its shape to focus, rather than relying on a bulky mechanical focus method. My guess is that RIM will go with a smaller form factor, something closer to the 9700. Only time will tell.

TripIt Now Available as a BlackBerry Client
January 21, 2010 at 12:17 PM

tripit for blackberry

Tripit for BlackBerry is available as a free download from today on. Tripit puts your TripIt itineraries on your BlackBerry including travel confirmation emails from corporate booking sites and corporate travel agencies. It also syncs travel plans with the built-in BlackBerry calendar which in-turn syncs with a traveler's Outlook calendar.

While the BlackBerry client is free, there is a paid service. When I last checked, the Pro price was $99 per year. Charter members of TripIt Pro pay no more than $49 per year.

Freezing Cold Winter? Swimsuit Beach BlackBerry Theme is Hot
January 21, 2010 at 10:14 AM

BlackBerry Cool is headquartered in Ottawa, Canada and it’s hard to describe just how insanely cold it is here. On the list of the coldest cities in the world, Ottawa is number 7. I just downloaded the latest Swimsuit Beach theme because it helps me stay warm in Canada’s national and cold capital. Also, a rotating background of babes in swimsuits helps.

Alltel Launch the BlackBerry Curve 8530 for $49.99
January 21, 2010 at 9:07 AM

blackberry_8530

Alltel have announced the BlackBerry Curve 8530 for $49.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate and a one year contract. This is a fairly good price but I still think this device should be free. It’s part of the low-end BlackBerry family and it would sell far more units being free.

Boost Mobile Shipping the BlackBerry Curve 8330 with OS 5?
January 21, 2010 at 8:53 AM

boost_mobile_os_5

Got a tip that Boost is shipping their 8330 with OS 5.0.0.438 which is strange because Sprint is not. It could be that the CB forums member who posted it, has a leaked version on their desktop which was installed, or a hoax altogether. If Boost is in fact shipping the 8330 with OS 5, that would mean an official OS launch is just around the corner.

BlackBerry to get biometric fingerprint scanning?
January 21, 2010 at 7:27 AM

fingerprint-1

It’s fun looking at BlackBerry patents because even though they may never come to fruition, you can always speculate on the pros and cons of actually implementing said patent. In a patent that was filed on February 26,2009 and updated on January 12th 2010, RIM demonstrate how biometric finger scanning could be implemented on a BlackBerry.

According to the description, the patent involves:

“An apparatus for input and fingerprint recognition comprises a touch surface, and a data processor coupled to the touch surface. The touch surface comprises a first region and a second region. The second region is distinct from and coplanar with the first region and occupies a minor portion of a total surface area of the touch surface. The data processor is configured to selectively operate the touch surface in a touch input mode or a fingerprint detection mode. In the touch input mode, the data processor is configured to operate the second region at a first resolution comparable to that of the first region to detect a touch input anywhere on the touch surface. In the fingerprint detection mode, the data processor is configured to operate the second region at a higher resolution than the first resolution to detect a fingerprint on the second region.

While fingerprint scanning would add another layer of security and could be very beneficial for large corporations and government, the average BlackBerry user does not fit into this category. The new BlackBerry user cares more about syncing their music OTA and downloading apps than protecting their content. So while this wouldn’t apply to mass market, you could probably sell a million of these to high security clients around the world.

Otterbox Commuter Series – BlackBerry Bold 9700 Review
January 21, 2010 at 7:16 AM

otterbox commuter (2)

Otterbox has been known to make high quality and durable cases for BlackBerry phones for some time now. They recently released their Otterbox Commuter Series for the BlackBerry 9700. I promptly handed this case over to my good buddy, Choco. He is a man’s man. We once went on a camping trip and he was asked to bring back firewood…he returned with a truck tow strap around his chest and a tree that he later cut into pieces. He opens beer bottles with his teeth. This is the guy to test the Otterbox. So what did Choco think?

Likes

The Otterbox came in nice packaging, it was good looking but I didn’t have to have a chainsaw and pry bar to open it *Note: He does carry these tools anyway* The materials are solid. It didn’t feel cheap where I could tug on it a couple of times and it loosen it up). I found all of the cut outs to be clean and smooth to the touch. The device feels a little bigger without being bulky which gave me a better grip. I found that the push buttons on the outside of the case work well and that everything maintained responsive. The case also doesn’t add very much weight to the phone which is important to me. I didn’t feel like the phone tried to fall out of the case, so it really inspired confidence.

Dislikes

The phone no longer fits in the holster and it doesn’t come with a replacement holster. I also found it troublesome to see the LED indicator from certain angles. The screen protector is a nice touch, but as most screen protectors, they can be a little tough to apply properly. Finally, I found the hard plastic doesn’t go all the way around, so whenever you want to plug in the charger or headphones it pulls back a little. I do suspect that it might stretch after a while, though.

Overall, the Otterbox Commuter for the 9700 is a winner. It has a great feel in my hands, it protects my BlackBerry when I forget to do so and it does it in a slim enough package that I can still stuff it in my pocket without feeling awkward.

There you have it folks! Choco is a fan of the Otterbox Commuter. If you have any questions about it, please post it in the comments and we’ll make sure you get taken care of!
