January 25, 2010 at 9:22 AM

blackberry_tour_9630

BGR is reporting that the BlackBerry Tour 9630 is on its way out at Best Buy. This is a regular occurrence whenever a device update is coming and I’m sure we’ll be seeing the Tour2 9650 in the next few months. I’m definitely looking forward to a trackpad and WiFi.

Motorola Files Patent Infringement Complaint Against RIM
January 25, 2010 at 8:44 AM

Phoenix Wright dude j'accuse-ing

Motorola has filed a complaint with the US International Trade Commission, alleging that RIM has infringed on five of Motorola’s patents. According to Motorola, RIM used to license these patents, but the deal expired in 2007.

The Motorola patents in the dispute relate to Wi-Fi access, application management, user interface and power management. The company wants the ITC to investigate RIM’s use of the patented technology. It is seeking an exclusion order that would bar imports of BlackBerry devices into the US and stop further sales of infringing products that have already been imported.

Xobni for BlackBerry Confirmed End of February 2010
January 25, 2010 at 8:08 AM

xobni_for_blackberry

Xobni’s Manager of Support, confirmed over LinkedIn that Xobni for BlackBerry will be released “towards the end of February.” Our good friend Brett made sure to screengrab the statement and throw it up on his Posterous blog, so we’ll be holding Xobni to that time frame. A month feels like a long time but I guess it’s not so bad considering this is such a cool app.

Troubleshooting Your BlackBerry Data Connection
January 25, 2010 at 6:10 AM

blackberry_wireless_connections

BlackBerry outages are a real frustration but sometimes there isn’t an outage and your data connection may be malfunctioning. With the help of the good folks at Made Simple Learning, I’ve put together some tips to help resolve your BlackBerry data connection. Use this guide when you aren’t able to use data and you haven’t seen any outage posts in the blogs.

If You See It Means That What You Should Do
OFF Your radio is turned off. Turn your radio back on: Click on "Manage Connections" >
"Restore Connections."
GSM (no logo) No data connection, only phone & SMS work Try turning on and off your wireless connections, as well as some of the tips below.
1XEV, 3G with logo Highest-speed data, phone & SMS text working If email and web are not working, then try the "Register Now.”
1X, EDGE High-speed data, phone & SMS are working. If email and web are not working, then try the "Register Now".
GPRS Low-speed data, phone & SMS are working. If email and web are not working, then try the "Register Now".
3G (no logo), 1xev, 1x, edge, gprs No data connection, phone & SMS are working. Try turning on and off your wireless connections, as well as some of the tips below.

BlackBerry data restoration tip 1: Try “Host Routing” > “Register Now”.

From your Home Screen, click on your the "Options" icon or press the Hot Key letter "O." Click on "Advanced Options". Now click on "Host Routing Table" (TIP: Press "H" to jump down there.)

In the Host Routing Table screen you will see many entries related to your BlackBerry phone company. Press the Menu key and select "Register Now." If you see the "Registration message sent!" then you should be ok. If you see a message like "Request queued and will be send when data connection is established" then try some more troubleshooting steps below.

BlackBerry data restoration tip 2: Try Resending Service Books

This step will work for you only if you have "Setup Internet E-Mail" or "Setup Personal E-mail." From your Home Screen, click on the Setup or Settings FOLDER then or "Manage Personal E-Mail" or "Set Up Internet Mail" icon. (Each carrier is a bit different.) If this is your first time, you may be asked to create an account or login to get to Personal Email Set Up.

After you have logged in to your Email setup screen. Press the MENU key and select the "Service Books" item. Then roll to the bottom of the screen and click on "Send Service Books" You should see a "Successfully Sent" message and then in your Messages icon, see a number of "Activation" messages – one per email account.

BlackBerry data restoration tip 3: Try soft and hard resets

If none of the above tips are working, try hard and soft resets. To soft reset your device, press and hold the following three keys simultaneously: ALT+RIGHT SHIFT(CAP)+DELETE. This is just like pressing “CTRL + ALT + DELETE” on a PC. To perform a hard reset, remove the battery for 30 seconds, and put it back in.

Hopefully by now your data connection is restored. Feel free to leave other tips and tricks in the comments.

RIM is Looking for Input on their Twitter Background
January 25, 2010 at 3:45 AM

Twitter_backgrounds

RIM’s Social Media team put up a post asking the community which Twitter background they prefer: @blackberry versus @blackberryblog. There doesn’t seem to be a difference between the two, other than @blackberry has crooked pictures on the side. If you ask me, they should have a white background with a new QR code each week. The QR code would be a link to a free app that RIM would kindly give out to the community for free. It could be a new theme, app or even ringtone. I’m sure there are a ton of developers out there who would be happy to run a giveaway through RIM’s twitter page. Is there anything you would like to see? Which one do you prefer?

BlackBerry Cool Roundup for the Week of January 18th
January 22, 2010 at 2:42 PM

It was a long week for the BlackBerry Nation. Some of my favorite highlights include our two contests, one for the PrivacyStar app, the other for an Epik case. In the app department, foursquare made the headlines by releasing their official client and one of my favorite iPhone developers, IUGO, launched 2 of their major titles for BlackBerry. In the news, the BlackBerry Curve 8330 got an official OS 5 update from Boost Mobile of all places. Regardless, we’ll just delete that vendor.xml file and get to work downloading. Hope you have a great weekend everybody!
